Staff:             How can I help you?

You:             Hi, my name is [Name] and I’m a constituent of [Reps Name]. I’m calling today about the murder of a Peace Corps Volunteer named Kate Puzey. I'm hoping that [Rep Name] will sign on to a letter requesting a reinvestigation of Kate's case being currently circulated by [Senator Isakson and Senator Boxer (if Senator)] or [Representative Ted Poe and Representative Sam Farr (if House Representative)].
Can I please speak with the staffer responsible for that issue? (in order: 1. Peace Corps, 2. Foreign Affairs, 3. Women’s Issues)

Relevant Staffer:             Hi this is [name]. How can I help you?

You:             Hi [their name], my name is [Your Name] and I’m a constituent of [Reps Name].
Have you heard about the letter yet?

Relevant Staffer: Yes / No

You:             [Provide further information & any personal connection - see email for more details]
EXAMPLE:
    (1) Your personal connection to Kate Puzey, and/or descriptions of who she was.
    (2) The importance of achieving justice for a model American citizen who died while serving her country in the Peace Corps.
    (3) The fact that Kate's murder case has stalled for five years, and that justice needs to be achieved both for Kate and to offer her family some closure.
    (4) The example of how the very similar case of the murder of Peace Corps Volunteer Karen Phillips was recently solved in Gabon by a cold case team in under a month, after the case had stalled for 14 years, leading to a successful conviction and closure.
[Wrapping up – be careful not to take too much time]
You:             I sure hope we can count on [Rep’s Name] to sign on to this important letter to help achieve justice for Kate. Thank you so much for your time and have a good day!

Final Notes:
  • If you cannot reach the relevant staff, it is okay to just leave them a voicemail, or leave a message with the person you speak with about your support for the bill
  • Remember: Always be polite and respectful.
  • It is great to include personal connections and make clear how much you care about the letter - but also be careful not to ramble on for too long (you want them to remember your call but not be annoyed – staffers are very busy people)
